My Family Coach: Women Discuss Life, Relationships & Parenting

5/6/10

Parenting Teens: Labels

All the years she was told she’s selfish
and he was labeled lazy
have created sores that won’t wash away
or heal
the pain that made them stay.

The girl who’s selfish cannot share
because she has nothing to give.
Depleted inside
feeling deprived
she needs you to forgive.

The boy who’s lazy is angry, too
but this he cannot say
to those who disapprove
and do not move
to guide him in his way.

Be careful what you tell your children
and how you view their behavior.
The path they choose reflects your own:
Are you their critic or
their savior?

Many years later (when you may be gone)
they’ll still remember your words.
You’ll shape their lives
in ways unknown
by actions that sustain or spurn.
