My Family Coach: Women Discuss Life, Relationships & Parenting

Women, do you tell your age?

I asked a friend today how old she'll be on her next birthday. She replied emphatically, "Oh no! I never tell my age!" I was so surprised; haven't we outgrown this archaic sign of vanity?

No wonder that women are rushing to get plastic surgery, if they can't reveal their true age even to a close friend! Do they still require the pretense of youth to feel good about themselves?

My friend admitted that when she was young she was determined not to repeat her mother's refusal to tell her age. (My mother, until very recently, did the same.) It was typical of that and previous generations of women. But she finds herself "unable" to break the taboo.

If we still hold onto these superficial notions of self-worth, we have not advanced to the 21st century.

It's time to grow up...and to grow old.

  • I have no problem telling people my age. I am grateful to Hashem that I am this old and still healthy, I can see and I can walk, and when I tell someone my age it reminds me to be grateful! Otherwise I really don't think about my age. I feel young inside, like a kid!
