Time for a Break

I will be taking time off the next 10 days from my work. It will be a physical break and a mental one as well. I will not return phone calls, answer emails or enter posts on my blog. Yes, I will have my cell phone for personal use, but it will be limited -- many areas in the mountains have no reception. Technology and its attendant stress will not intrude upon my repose.

It takes much self-discipline to let go of one's endeavors. We begin to identify so strongly with our "output" (whether writing, teaching or baking), that we may forget the importance of "input." There was a time when many people - not just academicians - took sabbaticals in order to think, read and recharge their minds. Is it any wonder that the word "sabbatical" derives from our own Sabbath? It is a time when we withdraw from the world and its concerns to invest in ourselves and our families and to spiritually recharge ourselves.

Is it time to recharge your batteries?
